I wholeheartedly agree with your review here. Sacking the rest of the band was the worst thing for The Shins, James Mercer is now riding on his melodic abilities - but it just doesn't make a great album. Those early albums are some of my favourite of all time but this newer stuff just isn't as good.
It can definitely be argued that way, no doubt about it. I feel like he has all the musical grounding and excellence for the pair but her charisma is also key.

A big RHCP fan, I think 7 is very kind - but you've got it bang on, Klinghoffer is ok being quiet but the band need Frusciante to drive them forward!

I was pleasantly surprised by the album. The more i listened the more i found little nuggets of sad poetry or intimate joy.
