The Best and Worst of Britpop
I've always had a love/hate relationship with Britpop. Putting this list together reminded me why. After the wave of US bands that filled my ears in the late 80s and early 90s, Britpop felt very mainstream. Sure everyone knew who Kurt Cobain was but he didn't look like some random bloke from your local pub. Yet that's what Britpop bands felt like to me, blokes in tracksuit tops and Adidas Gazelle trainers, basically everything I was trying to escape from listening to Mudhoney, Jane's Addiction and Sonic Youth.
By 1993 though, American bands were being nudged out of the British music press but there was still great guitar noise to be found in some of these albums. Bernard Butler's glam guitar on Suede's debut, Nick McCabe of The Verve and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. The albums and bands at the top of this list have stood the test of time.
Here are 60 artists represented by their best album from the Britpop era. What did I miss?
