The 50 Best Comeback Albums

Every once in a while an artist or a band breaks up, or goes on hiatus, or leaves their return ambiguous. Some times, they just produce one or two stinkers in a row, and people forget about them or say "yeah... they are fine." Many of those musicians never recover, but some do and end up surprising us. The following 50 albums either came after a period of critical and/or commercial failures, a lengthy hiatus, a bad break up, or if the artist just left it so open-ended as to whether they'd come back or not that we were all just so taken aback by it. I wish I could comment with more authority on this. The Aphex Twin pick is solid, although he was sneaking releases under The Tuss name.

I'd definitely say that Syro was a comeback. It felt like he'd been away, even though he was putting stuff out under another name it wasn't quite Aphex level.

I think the only one I would argue with is LOW. I don't think they really went away but I know what you mean about Double Negative, a massive change in direction. Also I hate U2 and don't think they ever made a decent album.

I can understand the Low inclusion. They weren't being panned or anything, but Double Negative definitely reignited interest in them after folks had mostly forgotten about them (outside of their diehards).

U2 has never been my cup of tea, but this album did bring them back to the favor of critics.

The one on here that resonates the most with me is Johnny Cash. So glad he had that late in life reinvention. One of my most memorable concert moments was seeing Johnny and June at the 9:30 Club circa 1995. She in particular was lively as Hell...

One of my most memorable concert moments was seeing Johnny and June at the 9:30 Club circa 1995. She in particular was lively as Hell and had plenty of off color comments to share. Fleet Foxes is a good catch. Seems obvious, but I wouldn't have thought of it. Good to know that the Aerosmith return to form is almost twice as good as Iron Maiden's. I'll keep it in mind for desperate times.
