If I Needed You - The Best of Townes Van Zandt

Townes Van Zandt had a prolific career in the late 60's and early 70's. After that, he pretty much self-destructed. He's been much anthologized and repackaged but here are the finest offerings from his most fertile period. I'd add The Nashville Sessions but its completely out of print. 2019's posthumous release, Sky Blue picks up the slack on this omission. Click an album below to read a review

Can’t go wrong, can you. I would have Flyin’ Shoes, Rain on a Conga Drum and Nashville Sessions in there in lieu of self titled, Our Mother, In the Beginning but you know, he was a wonderful musician across the board.

Rain On A Conga Drum isn't on here because its a compilation. Like I said, I'd add Nashville Sessions but its out of print and the SB List search engine can't seem to find it. I admit I deliberately overlooked Flying Shoes and maybe shouldn't. I just feel its really redundant in terms Old Quarter and Nashville. Think I'll amend that. I love both Our Mother and Self Titled which is why they're on here. The self titled was my intro so it holds a big place for me. Plus, they have must have's that are not on any other album or compilation. I think they're essential. I left off some of the later live material because his playing and voice are shot and he's obviously inebriated. I just find it painful to listen to.

Nashville Sessions was reprinted last year, but they never stay on the market for long that’s for sure. Sky Blue is a revelation.
