25 Essential Albums from the Australian Underground

Having grown up in it and frequented every run down dive that inner-city Sydney offered in the 1980s onwards, I feel fairly confident that the following 25 albums, if not definitive, are a good cross-section of the Australian underground for those wanting to venture in. I've left out Nick Cave because he has featured in his own list courtesy of that honorary Australian, Kevin Orton. Click an album below to read a review

Great list. I was going to suggest some others, but they are all from New Zealand! Have never listened to the Ed Kuepper album above, but loved Electrical Storm. Liberty Belle is probably my favorite Go-Betweens, and Forster in particular has...

The Ed Kuepper is superb. See if you can score some of the live Ed Kuepper, or a compilation of his Laughing Clowns stuff. I should have incuded Laughing Clowns.

When I was growing up, we used to pilfer all the NZ bands and call them our own, like Split Enz and even some of the classic Flying Nun bands, so for cred I left them out ! I could have included Midnight Oil, but in an act of wilfulness I left...
