"Did I mention that I exist?"

by Rich Morris Rating: Release Date:

Sonic adventurer and ever-evolving multi-instrumentalist Juffage is back with a new live single. Soundblab caught up with him for a beardy chinwag.

Your new single, ‘Stop Making Music’, is taken from a live performance last year.  Why did you decide to release it?

As a musician in 2015, you have to realize that everyone has about a five second attention/memory span. So, you have to keep reminding people that you exist, otherwise they'll probably forget about you. Did I mention that I exist? I also think it's a really great performance and it's way different from the original, so as a single it stands up well on its own.

It’s a reworking of a song from your debut album, Semicircle. How does it differ from the original?

Aside from the vocals, the main instruments in this new live version are guitar and bass, whereas the album version has no guitar or bass in it. Instead, it has a billion other things like piano, and underwater synthesizers.

It features Katie Harkin (Sky Larkin, Sleater-Kinney, Wild Beasts), Tom Evans (Vessels), and Jenna Isherwood (Invisible Cities). How did this live collaboration come about?

We're all good friends and have played together before. They all play on my new album that's coming out soon, and we played our first show together a couple years ago at Left Bank Leeds inside of a multi-channel, ambisonic array of PA speakers. This was our second gig together, and a slightly less ambitious one since I didn't spend a year building a computer program to control the whole concert this time.

You usually play everything yourself and live you’re kind of a one-man band. How did you find playing in a four-piece?

Um, it's great!

Any plans for that band to play together live again?

Not currently, but never say never!

You’re off in a UK tour next month. Will you be playing as a solo artist? What can people expect?

Yep, these are solo gigs coming up. I have a bunch of new material that's a lot more song-based, for lack of a better word. I'm working with a new amp/pedal configuration to coax a pretty dense sound out of just guitars and voice, which is enjoyable.

You also have a new album coming out later this year. What can you tell us about that?

Well, the first thing I can tell you is that I don't know when it's actually coming out or what's happening with it, but it's done! It took forever to make and I'm really happy with the way it turned out. Katie is singing on it about as much as I am, the drones are droney-er, and the pop songs are way more bulletproof.

What music is currently inspiring you?

I'm really into the new Mount Eerie record, Sauna, and the new Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld album but aside from that, ‘new music’ hasn't been doing it for me much, even though I keep up with it constantly since I have nine hours a day to listen to new music at my job. Plus lots of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Neil Young, Alex Konadu, Emahoy Tsegue-Mariam Gebrou, Windy & Carl, John Holt…

Do you have any other projects on the go? You’ve also previously worked as a recording engineer and remixer.

I have something new in the works, though it's so early I don't really know what's happening with it. But, I also recently joined the band Invisible Cities as a drummer for a month before they split up for good. I had a great time and we recorded an entire full-length album in one day at Greenmount Studios, which should also be coming out soon.

So after the tour and the album, what’s next?

I've actually already started working on another new album, which I have a ton of drums recorded for, like lots of drums. So, I'll probably continue working on that. Recording is the best.
