The Soft Moon's Luis Vasquez speaks with Rob Taylor of Soundblab about the album 'Deeper'

by Rob Taylor Rating: Release Date:

Soundblab recently caught up with Luis Vasquez of The Soft Moon for some insights into their new album, Deeper, a brilliant melange of post-punk, industrial, noise-rock and electronic dance music. The album carries a very personal narrative for Luis, who spent long periods in isolation wresting at his demons. Deeper is the result.

There seems to be various influences at play on the album. Are there any which highlight themselves on Deeper, do you think? Cinematic influences, as well as musical ones?

The biggest influence comes from my existence as a human being. For Deeper, i wanted to rely solely from within (sic) to express as much of myself as possible. The Soft Moon has always been a sort of autobiography of my life.

It's always hard for me to realize specifically what inspires my music. For instance with my track 'Wrong', I could say that my experience in Berlin attending techno clubs somehow inspired the direction of that particular song, but then again that goes back to just living my life and letting my subconscious make decisions when it's time to create material.

Deeper is full of foreboding, disquiet, unmitigated darkness. The emotional anguish is palpable. Do you feel personally exposed by the release of Deeper?

I definitely feel exposed but this is all part of the process for me. In my everyday life I struggle with expressing how I feel and in fact I even struggle with who I am. My music gives me the chance to let go and be myself in a way that makes me feel confident. The irony is that for me The Soft Moon is a torturous process but necessary in order for me to reach inner peace.

Does the release of Deeper also provide cathartic release from that phase in your life?

I won't really know until I start performing Deeper within a live context. The writing process is one half of the catharsis and the other half is performing live on stage. That's where it all comes out but I have yet to know how the new material will make me feel.

My prediction is that it will be the most cathartic to date which makes me nervous. I've experienced a few emotional breakdowns on stage but Deeper is my most personal material so far.

Do you think the album will convert well played to a live audience ? I know that you use a visual medium in your shows. Does the projected image help to convey the myriad emotions?

At the moment I can only hope it translates well to a live audience. So far, much of my discography has been successful live but I guess I'll know very soon when I embark on the US tour. I

n regards to the visual element at our shows: for me, it's important to stimulate everyone on multiple sensory levels in order to create a world of it's own. I strive to make people feel something deep and to make an emotional connection.
