Andy Brown's Albums & Singles of 2012

by Andy Brown Rating: Release Date:

When commentators look back and evaluate the musical landscape of the year it always seems tempting to organise everything into suitably convenient boxes. Each year comes to signify the emergence of a certain type of music or scene; a somewhat straight-forward account where everyone collectively tuned into the same station.

The truth of the matter, of course, is that the 'best' years are always an eclectic mix of musical styles and genres. So 2012 wasn't the year of nu-rock, the post-romantic psychedelics or the ironic synth-pop appreciation cultists; 2012 was just a fantastic year for new music.

Below I've somehow managed to decide on five albums that have stood out for me this year but it represents a fraction of the fine music that has passed through my ears these last 12 months. 2012 has seen equally exceptional releases from the likes of Flaming Lips, Om, Grumbling Fur, Golden Void, Julian Cope, Swans and Eternal Tapestry to name a few.

So, without further ado, here are my albums and singles of the year………
