Record Store Day 2012

by Rich Morris Rating: Release Date:

Hooray! Hooray! Tomorrow is Record Store Day, the annual celebration of independent record shops, and, as usual, a whole host of bands and artists will lend their support, many releasing exclusive, limited-edition records. Soundblab urges you to have a look and find out if there's something happening near you, but here's a round up of some Record Store Day related stuff.

Experimental alternative-rock supergroup Tomahawk will be releasing a luxurious three LP retrospective entitled Eponymous to Anonymous exclusively for Record Store Day. The compilation will be limited to 5000 copies worldwide and marks the first time that these albums will be available on vinyl. What's more, in the packaging, there will be space for a fourth vinyl, alluding to a brand new Tomahawk album that is expected in the summer.

For record store day, Louder Than War Records will be celebrating the return of the legendary post-punk band The Membranes by releasing a limited-edition triple a-side, which marks their first release in 22 years and they are sounding as edgy as ever.

Meanwhile, Domino are releasing Animal Collective - Tranverse Temporal Gyrus. The music on this record is a collage consisting of the original tracks and live recordings made for and at a unique performance as part of an installation by Animal Collective and visual artist Danny Perez at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City in March 2010. The 12" comes with an exclusive 24x36 foldout poster.

Also working together for the good of listeners everywhere are King Creosote & Jon Hopkins who release a limited 7" to coincide with the Jubilee Edition of 2011's excellent, Mercury-nominated, Diamond Mine. The single, released on Domino, features two brand new tracks, 'Third Swan' and 'Starboard Home'.
