Soundblab Awards 2012 - Get Voting!

by Rich Morris Rating: Release Date:

Well, I guess it's that time of year again. The music mags, sites and blogs have blessed us with their best of the year lists (including us, of course) and The Brits have swung round once more to celebrate everything shallow and glossy about pop music while acting like it's just discovered some really cool bands which it just wants to share with its really cool mates, who just happen to be James Corden and Fern Cotton. Anyone else feeling a little dead inside at the thought of that?

So we thought we'd cheer ourselves up by kicking off the annual Soundblab Awards. The other great thing about the Soundblab Awards is that they're entirely voted for by you: our members, contributors and users. So the winners are a genuine reflection of who you think deserves recognition and respect. We're giving you the chance to get your bitch on and tell us who you think delivered the worst music of 2011. And then there's the Soundblab Legend Award: each year we want to crown someone different who's made a seismic and indisputably pioneering contribution to music. It could be someone great who's passed away in the last year, or just someone who's always been a personal hero of yours. Here's your chance to pay tribute.

The categories are below. Have a think and get voting either by commenting below or emailing editor@soundblab.com.

Best Single: Milk Music - Beyond Living
(It reminds me of my youth)

Best Band: I could easily say the Horrors again but just so I can get a vote in for these guys I'll say Smith Westerns

Best Solo Artist: Toro Y Moi
Best Video: I'm struggling with this one as I never see any videos.

Best Album Artwork: Justice, because it looks like some prog album from the 70s.

Worst Album: Without hearing it I'll say Ed Sheeran, I've heard the singles and seen his face and that's enough for me.

Worst Single: Ed Sheeran, no idea what it's called but the one that was played to death a few months back. When I listen to it I have to wonder what makes a man writer lyrics like that?

Worst Band: Ed Sheeran. I know he's not a band but this counts right? He fills a hole left by Sam Duckworth/Get Cape and that's a hole that doesn't need filling.

Best Dressed: The Horrors

Worst Dressed: Ed Sheeran. Can you tell that I don't like him?

Best Newcomer: Dam Mantle

Legend Award: Based on still being active I'd say Brian Eno. I say it through gritted teeth though because of his work with Coldplay and U2.

Most Missed: Are we only allowed to miss dead people? If so can I have Preston from the Ordinary Boys? Is he dead, or was that just the best dream I've ever had?

Best Live Act: Panda Bear. A load of electronics, one guitar and a massive screen of visuals doesn't sound like the best gig but it was brilliant.

Best Floor Filler: I'm too old to dance so I built my own dancefloor for one in my living room. After a few hours 212 by Azealia Banks made me strut my stuff.
