Singles Club: 2010

by Andy Brown Rating: Release Date:

Ah, the long lost art of the single! I remember when a single would have four tracks, interesting cover art and a cracking cover version that would spark debate around the school yard all day long… Ahem, well, the world of the pop single may have changed quite a bit over the years but it's definitely still out there for those who remain obsessed with exclusive b-sides, seven-inch records and having that ever alluring first glimpse at an upcoming album. Some singles define a period in music or even go on to 'define a generation'. Some singles are bedsit lifelines while others are dancefloor classics. Some singles are a big surprise, remember hearing Pulps' 'This Is Hardcore' for the first time?

So what has 2010 given us? What songs had you turning up the radio or racing to your local record emporium to track down that limited, etched and numbered vinyl-only single? What had you throwing hard earned cash at your iTunes account? What b-sides blew you away and impressed your friends? Below, in no real order, are my choices for the Top 10 Singles of 2010…

Blur - 'Fools Day'. Record Day release and their first new material in a long time - exciting stuff.

Wind-Up Birds - 'Tyre Fire'. Great single from a great up-and-coming Leeds band, the b-side 'There Won't Always Be an England' is pretty special too. Check out the a-side here:

Grinderman - 'Heathen Child'. They'd been away too long. Fun, sexy and frightening in all the right places...

LCD Soundsystem - 'Drunk Girls'. Perhaps not their most groundbreaking single but certainly a whole lotta fun…

Clinic - 'I'm Aware'. Their most disarmingly beautiful song yet…

Veronica Falls - 'Found Love in a Graveyard'. Possibly the years finest single/song. A band to watch! Go on, watch 'em:

Pissed Jeans- Sam Kinison Woman. Been away since last years mighty 'King Of Jeans' album, a welcome return. B-side sounds like Flipper too…

Comet Gain - 'I Never Happened'. Pretty much anything new by Comet Gain is a cause for celebration, this is no exception. The b-side's a cover of New Orders 'Love Vigilantes' too…

The Cribs - 'Housewife'. The Cribs understand the importance of a special none-album single (check 'You're Gonna Lose Us' and 'Don't You Wanna Be Relevant?'). 'Housewife' was perhaps the most confusing slice of Jarman rock yet. Slightly crap lyrics but an ultimately great tune…

Best Coast- 'When I'm with You'. Makes you pine for the summer!

OK, so that's 10 fine tunes right there. One problem I came across while putting this list together, however, seemed to be a number of songs I was sure were singles but weren't. Example: I heard the wonderful 'Boyfriend' by Best Coast on the radio quite a bit this year but it doesn't seem to have been released as an actual single! Hence the inclusion of 'When I'm With You'…

So what are your favourite singles of 2010? What songs should have been singles? Is the single even that important anymore? Big questions, small running times….

I miss the single, it's not what it was. I blame HMV, they stopped stocking them. I know there's a great 7" single revival going on but I have to admit that I love the cd single and a lot of stuff now is only released on 7" and download, what's...

I will have a think about my singles of the year...

Can I nominate a worst single of the year? Ever Fallen In Love by The Noisettes. Oh. Dear. God. Somebody stop that band now.

Agree on the Veronica Falls single, bloody brilliant.

The Noisettes are truly dreadful. It's a shame cos they were alright when they started, before they became blank-eyed mainstream crossover machines. What's that fucking song that goes "she's always a women to me"? Was that released this year? If so, then THAT is my nomination of massive pile of wankshit of the year. I hate it so much. What does it even mean? That has to be the worst case of damning with faint praise ever. Why doesn't he sing "she's always a carbon-based lifeform to me"? Argh! If it wasn't released this year.. Well, it's still shit.

The X-Factor sonically assaulting David Bowie with their awful version of 'Heroes' is easily the worst single I've heard this year! I was unfortunate enough to see a few minutes of it being performed on TV, dear lord when all the soldiers came on stage and all the X-Factor singers started trying to 'out-Mariah-Carey' each other; "We can beee heroeeesss!". Yes, I know it's a charity single but why, oh why does it have to be so awful!? First they tried to ruin Jeff Buckley and Leonard Cohen for me with Hallelujah and now they're after Bowie! Maybe I'm just a elitist fool or maybe I'm simply out of touch with the world of pop but the stuff that comes out of X-Factor and the like just makes me feel hollow...This, ladies and gentleman, is the state of the popular single! That and Katy Perry! Oh dear.....

I didn't even know about that! I assume it's a charity single to support the troops. Because the lyrics in the song could defintiely relate to that, couldn't they? Wow. That's just so reductionist is actually beyond irony. And don't even get me...

I didn't even know about that! I assume it's a charity single to support the troops. Because the lyrics in the song could defintiely relate to that, couldn't they? Wow. That's just so reductionist is actually beyond irony. And don't even get me started on Katy fucking Perry. That fact that she's declared herself a gay icon after the exploitation of 'I Kissed a Girl' and the outright homophobia of 'You're So Gay' is just sick. And no one seems to question it! Arrgghh (again)!

Yeah, I think it's one of those things where, if you have to point it out yourself it's pretty obvious you're not that.

What I miss about singles is the remixes. Sometimes they outshine the originals and shed a completely different light on the song.

B-sides in general are the best thing about singles; a unexpected cover version, a long-lost demo track or yeah a decent remix...although I have to say I remember hearing some pretty dodgy remixes back when I'd buy cassette singles on a regular...
