In the City

by Rich Morris Rating: Release Date:

The place: Manchester. The sound: great music of almost every variety. The feeling: unbridled joy. Kicking off today, Manchester's In the City festival returns with a new location, a brand new hub and a fresh modus operandi. The new location is Manchester's Piccadilly and Northern Quarter, the city's cultural and creative heartland. Packed with venues, bars, record shops, cafes and hangouts, it's the natural home for In the City and a tried and tested location for urban festivals.

Also including In the City unsigned, which will no doubt provide a launch pad for talent we'll all be listening to this time next year, the festival features a dazzling array of acts including No Age, Mount Kimbie, Male Bonding, Yuck, Crystal Fighters, Factory Floor, oOoOO, White Ring, Skepta, Kisses (performing their debut UK shows), Ital Tek, Teeth, Andreya Triana, Mazes, John Weise, Spectrals and many more.

Continuing early hours of Saturday morning, In the City is, of course, a festival of two halves: the live side and the conference, which is where movers and shakers debate the future of the industry. Operating under this year's overall theme, "That that don't kill me can only make me stronger," it provides a vital forum via keynote addresses, celebrity interviews, master-classes, panels and seminars. Keynote speakers include Roc Nation President & Co-Founder Jay Brown in conversation with Nick Raphael, MD of Epic Records, a dance music panel titled Unblocked Beats featuring Jho Oakley, Nick Halkes and Caroline Protheroe plus Manchester dance music legend/MD of the newly re-launched Deconstruction Records Mike Pickering in conversation with Paul Morley.

Established in 1992 by Tony Wilson and Yvette Livesey, In the City has always embodied the spirit of its founders: innovative, rebellious, forward-thinking. Previous band and artists who found wider exposure through the festival in past years include Oasis, Radiohead, Suede, Elastica, Foo Fighters, Elbow, Ash, The Verve, Badly Drawn Boy, Bjork, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Gallows, Lady Sovereign, Maximo Park, and Smashing Pumpkins.

All delegate registration information can be found by visiting www.inthecity.co.uk where a full breakdown of all the various packages on offer and the opportunity to register online is available. If you're going, have a fantastic time, and Soundblab will see you down the front!

Factory Floor last night were awesome, my ears are still ringing. Shame they had the power cut and had to be ushered off stage.

They're playing Manchester again at the end of the month if you fancy it. I'm convinced that the singer was staring at me in a strange way and I'd like to see them to see if she does it again. She has this menacing look going on which is great,...

They're playing Manchester again at the end of the month if you fancy it. I'm convinced that the singer was staring at me in a strange way and I'd like to see them to see if she does it again. She has this menacing look going on which is great, she'd be a bit scary if it wasn't for the fact she has really nice shiny hair.
