Sivert Höyem

UK October Tour

London's Cargo - Friday, October 8

Norwegian songsmith Sivert Höyem makes his return to British shores this autumn for a rare series of UK Tour dates, his first since the release of epic album Moon Landing earlier this year. The tour will include dates at Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester, and will culminate at London's Cargo on Friday, October 8.

His summer has been dedicated to a rigorous European tour schedule, the high point of which saw Sivert support his idol Leonard Cohen on home soil. The billing could not have been more appropriate - Sivert's music is a latter day incarnation of Cohen's poetic brood, and Moon Landing is very much the phoenix risen from the flames of personal tragedy.

For 13 years, Sivert enjoyed critical acclaim and worldwide record sales in the multi-millions as the lead singer of Norway's greatest rock band, Madrugada. Then, mid-way through the recording of a new album, tragedy struck. Guitarist Robert Burås suffered a fatal drugs overdose, sending the band into emotional and creative turmoil. Just two months later, whilst attempting to complete what would inevitably be the final Madrugada album, Sivert suffered a second blow with the death of his father.

He responded to this personal and professional free-fall by retreating to a cabin high in the Norwegian mountains, accompanied by friends including Kalle Gustafson (of The Soundtrack of Our Lives), for a series of cathartic recording sessions which would later come to form Moon Landing. It is, therefore, an album forged from anger and fear- but what emerges is a collection of sprawling, bleakly beautiful pop opuses which see Sivert emerge in blistering form from the shadow of Madrugada.

Hoyem's gravelly baritone delivery summons up the dark drama that Scott Walker made his calling card on 'Lost at Sea', while 'Shadown/High Meseta' is shot through with the dystopian menace of Sonic Youth (with whom Moon Landing mixerJohn Agnello also has credits). Yet whille Moon Landing makes deft reference to these forebearers of pop noire, these echoes never obscure the ownership that Sivert has stamped on these songs. Höyem previously confessed of Moon Landing that "I wanted the title to tell people something about the ambition I have for this album", and he has made good with the crafting of melodic rock soundscapes which leave few in any doubt of his orbital ascent.
