Cry Tomorrow

Belle Sound

Released: Monday 2 August 2010

An album full of little gems of pop songs, Stephanie Finch's Cry Tomorrow never drops a beat - every track is well-written and catchy with a heavy 60s sound. Accompanied by The Company Men, including Finch's own husband Chuck Prophet, they provide garage rock guitars, tinkling piano and harmonious backing vocals.

Pop should not be a dirty word and the album is an enjoyable listen. Finch's vocals are smooth and tuneful. With every song comes a different character and Finch tells the story well; 'Count the Days 1-2-3-4-5-6-7', is a sassy sing-a-long, whilst 'Sensitive Boys' is slower and more sly, 'In My Book of Love' has a Motown feel, whilst 'Don't Back Out Now' seems more like country blues and 'Tina Goodbye' definitely has a Velvet Underground influence.

However, despite the hit list of songs, like a Sunday afternoon, the album wonders along pleasantly but does not really delivering any memorable punches. While I wish all modern pop sounded this good, I can't help but think there's something more worthwhile of your time on the record store shelves.
