The Coral

In The Morning

Deltasonic

Released: Monday 9 May 2005

HOYLAKE psych-folk collective The Coral continue - like Blur before them - to be one of the nation's great, cherished singles bands.

Neither has yet managed (although I think both still have it in them) to release that landmark, seminal album, but go and watch them live and you'll be simply knocked out by just how many standout singles they possess in their armoury.

In The Morning is one of bowl-haired frontman James Skelly and Co's better offerings too. Made for the kind of hazy, lazy sunny Sundays like the one I'm write this on, its jangly melody bounces along while Skelly - in full Ray Davies mode - regales with ordinary, yet intriguing tales of his love life.

Clocking in at just over two-and-a-half minutes, it gone in a jiffy too - thankfully The Coral have hung around a lot longer than that.

Here's hoping studio album number six, Butterfly House, proffers more of the same.
